Angelina Jolie Full Speech at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment 2017

I imagine many of us in the room began this morning at home making breakfast and listening and doing last minute homework and listening and debating the importance of brushing teeth.

And listening after you say you have to get ready now and they say why don’t you just go like that, and you’re so tired, you think, oh maybe. 

But that’s the life of a woman, to think of others first is our nature. 

And when my children asked me this morning, I explained why I wanted to be here, why I feel it’s important to be with other women and talk about those women and women in art.

All of us here are different people, but we have something quite radical in common. 

We have the freedom to be artists. The freedom to create, to challenge authority fearlessly, to laugh at power and make others laugh with us. The right to speak truth as we see it. 

We all know women in our lives who were never able to live their creative dreams because they had to put their families first. 

Who pour their creative work into homework assignments and birthday parties. I think of my own mom.

And we all know that our industry lacks diversity and equality and that there is so much that we have to change and fight for. 

But we have a level of freedom that is unimaginable for millions of other women around the world. 

Women who live with conflict and terrorism and displacement and poverty, who never get a chance, whose voices are always silenced. 

We don’t have to keep our heads down. We don’t have to think that the film we make or our comments on politics or joke we tell on stage could land us in prison where we might be tortured or punished. 

We don’t live with censorship. We don’t have to worry that acting in a play or singing on television will bring violence or dishonor to our families. 

We don’t have to tailor our clothes or our opinions to what is acceptable to religious authorities or violent extremist groups. 

We are not shunned and considered immoral as women because we dare to speak our mind about what we consider to be wrong in society.

We have the right to think freely and to speak freely and to put forward our ideas on equal terms. 

And there are women across the world who face serious danger and get hurt just trying to have a voice, just an opinion. 

So it’s hard to celebrate our progress while this is still the case, but it means that asserting ourselves as female artists represents something really, really important in the world today. 

And participating in art and culture, it’s not a luxury for a privileged few in society. 

It is in fact a human right laid down in the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

Every woman has a right not only to independence and security but to live her life to the full and to express herself to the full, including through art and ideas as well as politics. 

And that right is denied so often to women because it is so powerful.

Art influences and it catches the imagination, 

it challenges orthodoxy and societies where women are denied freedom of expression, those societies are being shaped without the voice and influence and wisdom of women. 

So that is why I’m so grateful to be a part of this community and the wider community of artists around the world. 

I’m so happy to be here with you today, and so together we stand for more than our rights and freedoms but we do stand for the freedoms and rights of all women. 

We have in this room the ability to help those women, artists struggling, to help find a way to make sure their voices are heard. 

To show solidarity with them. To champion them. To help them tell their stories. 

So I look forward to working with many of you, all of you, on that effort.

I thank you. I thank the Hollywood Reporter for this event, for allowing us to be together and to speak. 

And I congratulate everyone being acknowledged, particularly everyone involved in the scholarship program. Hey, girls. Hi, girls.

And I pay tribute, and we all do, to all the women who came before us, who pushed the boundaries in their lifetime so that we could be standing here today. 

And above all, pay tribute to the women, artists, journalists, human rights defenders and lawyers around the world who refuse to be intimidated. 

The brave people who are fighting so that others, one day, will have the freedoms that we have. 

So I’m very, very proud to stand with all of you. Thank you very much.

이 곳에 있는 많은 분이 아침에 집에서 식사를 차리면서 아침을 시작했을거라 생각해요. 그러면서 아이들의 말을 들어주고, 숙제를 마무리시키고, 양치질의 중요성에 대해 논쟁을 하죠.

여러분들도 나갈 준비를 해야 한다고 하고 아이들은 "그냥 그러고 가면 되지 않아요?"라고 말하면 너무 피곤해서 "그래도 되겠다" 싶기도 하죠. 

그게 여성의 삶이죠. 남을 먼저 생각하는게 우리의 본성이에요. 

제 아이들이 오늘 아침 물었을 때 저는 왜 제가 이 곳에 참석하기를 원하는지 설명해줬어요. 왜 다른 여성들과 함께 하고 왜 그 여성들과 예술계에 종사하는 여성들에 관해 얘기하는 것이 중요하다고 생각하는지 말이죠. 

이곳에 있는 우리는 모두 달라요 하지만 보다 근본적인 부분에서 공통점이 있어요.

우리는 아티스트가 될 자유가 있죠. 창작할 자유, 권위에 두려움 없이 도전할 자유, 권력을 비웃을 자유, 다른 사람과 함께 웃을 수 있는 자유, 우리가 본 진실을 말할 권리가 있죠.

우리는 모두 우리 삶 속에서 자신의 가족을 먼저 생각해야 했기때문에 자신의 창의적인 꿈을 실현하지 못했던 여성들을 알고 있죠.

창의적인 작업은 숙제와 생일 파티에 쏟아냈죠. 우리 엄마를 떠올리게 돼요.

우리는 모두 우리 산업에 다양성과 평등이 결여되어 있고, 바꾸고 싸워야 하는 것들이 너무 많다는 사실을 알고 있죠.

하지만 우리는 전 세계 수백만의 여성들이 상상하지도 못할 수준의 자유를 누리고 있어요.

충돌과 테러리즘, 난민생활과 빈곤을 겪으며 살아가는 여성이 있죠.

한번도 기회를 얻지 못하고, 항상 묵살당하는 여성들이죠.

우리는 조심스럽게 행동하지 않아도 되죠.

우리는 우리가 만드는 영화나 무대에서 말하는 정치적인 견해나 농담으로 감옥에 갇히지는 않을까 생각하지 않아도 되죠.

고문을 당하거나 벌을 받을 수도 있는 감옥 말이에요.

우리는 검열받는 삶을 살지 않죠.

우리가 하는 연기나 텔레비전에서 부르는 노래로 인해 우리 가족이 폭력을 당하거나 망신을 당할까 걱정하지 않아도 되죠.

우리는 종교당국이나 극단주의자들에게 용인될 수 있도록 우리 옷이나 의견을 그들에게 맞추지 않아도 되죠.

우리는 우리 사회에서 부당하다고 여겨지는 것에 대해 감희 의견을 말한다고 소외당하거나 부도덕한 여성으로 여겨지지 않아요.

우리는 자유롭게 생각하고 말할 권리가 있고 대등한 조건으로 우리 아이디어를 내세울 수 있어요.

전 세계에 목소리를 내려 하고 의견을 가지려 한다는 이유만으로 극도의 위험에 처하거나 다치는 여성들이 있어요.

여전히 이런 일들이 벌어지고 있는데 우리가 진전하고 있다고 축하하기는 어렵죠. 

하지만 이런 사실은, 오늘날 이 세계에서 우리가 여성 예술가로서 단호히 나서는 것이 정말 중요하다는 걸 의미하죠.

그리고 예술과 문화에 참여하는 것은 사회에서 특권을 얻는 몇몇 사람들만 누리는 호사가 아니에요.

사실, 유엔세계인권선언에 명시되어있는 인간의 권리죠.

모든 여성은 독립과 안전할 권리와 함께, 충실하게 삶을 살며 예술과 아이디어를 통해, 그리고 정치적인 방식으로 자신을 온전하게 표현할 권리도 있죠.

하지만 이것이 너무 강력해서 자주 그런 권리를 인정해 주지 않아요.예술은 영향을 미치고 마음을 사로잡죠. 

여성의 표현의 자유가 허락되지 않은 그래서 여성의 의견과 영향력과 지혜 없이 형성된 사회에서는 전통적인 관행에 도전하기도 하죠.

그래서 제가 이 공동체와 전세계 예술가들이 속한 더 폭넓은 공동체의 일원이라는 사실에 매우 감사하죠. 

오늘 여러분과 함께 이 자리를 해서 너무 기쁩니다. 우리의 자유와 권리를 넘어서, 우리는 모든 여성의 자유와 권리를 지지합니다.

이 곳에 있는 우리는 곤경에 처한 여성예술가들을 도울 능력이 있습니다. 그들이 주장하는 바에 확신을 주는 방법을 찾아주고, 

그들과 연대하고, 옹호하고, 이야기에 귀를 기울일 능력이 있습니다.

이러한 노력을 여기 있는 모든 분들과 함께 할 수 있기를 기대합니다.이러한 이벤트를 주최하고 우리 함께 모여 말할 수 있게 해준 할리우드 리포터 측에 감사드려요.

오늘날 우리가 이곳에 서 있을 수 있도록 평생 그들의 한계를 극복했죠.

무엇보다도 여성 예술가, 저널리스트들에게 경의를 표합니다. 또한 인권운동가와 두려움 없는 전세계의 변호사들에게 경의를 표합니다.

현재 우리가 누리고 있는 자유를 언젠가 다른사람들도 누릴 수 있도록 싸운 용감한 사람들에게도요.

저는 오늘 여러분 모두와 함께 설 수 있어서 자랑스럽습니다. 감사합니다.

여전히 이렇다. 사실이다.

'case'는 경우/사건/케이스 등의 의미로 잘 알려져 있는데요 어떤 것이 사실임을 의미하기도 해요.

그래서 여기서 'this is the case'는 "[앞서 말한 것]이 사실이다."라는 의미입니다. still을 더해, 그런일들이 여전히 존재하고, 일어나고 있음을 말할 수 있어요.

반대로, 'This is not the case.'는 "사실은 이렇지 않다."는 뜻입니다.

[예시]

We cannot be sure this is the case. 우린 이것이 사실인지 확신할 수 없다.

This was the case in the past, but now life is different. 과거는 이랬지만 지금 삶은 다릅니다.

This is not the case in japan, 일본에서는 이렇지 않다.

stand for

지지하다/나타내다/용납하다. stand for는 무언가를 위해 서있는 것인데요, 무언가를 상징하기 위해 가만히 서 있는 것일 수도 있고, 누군가를 지지하고 어떤 의견을 옹호하기 위해 일어서는 것일 수도 있고, 어떤 일을 가만히 서서 용납하는 것일 수도 있어요. 본문에서는 지지하고, 옹호한다는 [support]의 의미로 쓰였어요.

[예시]

I hated the organization and all it stood for. 나는 그 단체와 그들이 옹호하는 모든 것이 싫었다.

You're supposed to stand for something, to protect people. 당신은 사람들을 보호하기 위해서 무언가를 지지해야 해요.

pay tribute to ~

에게 경의를 표하다.

tribute 는 찬사/공물/조공을 뜻하는데요, 누군가에게 tribute를 바친다는 건, 그에게 찬사를 보내고, 좋은 일의 공을 돌리고, 경의를 표하는 것입니다.

I pay tribute to a number of people. 많은 분들께 경의를 표합니다.

I want to pay tribute to her relentless pursuit of truth. 나는 그녀의 끈질긴 진실 추구에 경의를 표하고 싶다.
